Case Study
Bent River was approached by a leading near-earth satellite manufacturer for assistance in developing its solar panel manufacturing process. The customer’s primary goal was to design and build a manufacturing system for their production floor’s Alpha units, but they were facing high costs of input materials due to the unique requirements of space vs. terrestrial solar. Additionally, the input materials had their own set of manufacturing challenges, which slowed down the process and drove up costs with excessively labor-intensive procedures.
The client had previously worked with Bent River and believed our laminator could be the solution to their aerospace tooling needs. After visiting our Clarkdale, Arizona, office, they discovered that we could also provide manufacturing process development. Bent River engineers worked alongside the client’s team to develop a semi-automated and automated process for space-grade solar panel manufacturing. The solution involved developing tools and equipment that were needed to facilitate the client’s own in-house manufacturing process. The results were impressive — the takt time for each panel reduced from 3.5 hours to just 14 minutes, resulting in significant cost and time savings for the customer.
